Founding of the Society

1732 - 1740	According to Dülmen 1992, p.147, this Society was founded in 1732. In Footnote 5 of p.269 of Joachim Georg Darjes (1714-1791): Der Kameralist als Schul- und Gesellschaftsreformer, we read that “Marwinski geht von einer Gründung 1732 aus, doch gab Fabricius 1734 bekannt, dass die Jenaer Vertraute Rednergesellschaft zu dieser Zeit "bereits über drei jahr gedauret habe" (vgl. MARWINSKI, Fabricius, S. 82; TN 1734, N. IIII, S. 29). Spätestens mit Fabricius' Weggang aus Jena 1740 endeten die Zusammenkünfte.” This last paragraph makes it clear that Fabricius (Johann Andreas Fabricius, 1696–1769) was the prime mover in this society, and when he departed from Jena in 1740, the meetings ended. Furthmore, in Footnote 10, p.342 of Unbekannter Absender an Gottsched, [Juli] 1747 we find that Fabricius apparently founded this Jena-based society in opposition to the Teutsche Gesellschaft in Jena, which had been founded in 1728 and ran until 1798.
