According to its website
()
(and also Rumeu de Armas (2001), p.19),
this Academy finds its origins in a group that formed in 1735 around
D.Julián Hermosilla and focussed on history, but took the
rather more emphatic name Academia Universal.
On 1738, April 18 by Royal order of Felipe V, this group was transformed
into the Real Academia de la Historia
(its website
()
and also
Rumeu de Armas (2001), p.21).
We find the name
Real Academia de la Historia in use as early as 1759
as seen in the following record in the
Biblioteca Nacional de España cat.:
Oración de la Real Academia de la Historia al Rey N.S. Don
Carlos III, con motivo de su exaltación al trono
(Madrid : Antonio Pérez de Soto, 1759 16 p.)
It is, however, interesting to note that the name given in the title of its first
journal (the Fastos) was:
Real Academia Española de la Historia; this journal title
ran from 1739 to 1741.

Rumeu de Armas (2001).
