According to
Rauter (1970), pp.152 this Society was
founded in 1739, and was still in existence in 1752.
It was an anomaly among the Deutschen Gesellschaften since
Greifswald was itself a Swedish possession at the time and until
1815, long after the Society had disappeared.
Rauter, p.152 also points out that the charter of the Society
(published in 1740) was issued
by the King of Sweden, Frederik I (1720-1751), and would therefore have
been a Swedish royal charter, not a German royal charter.
The text of the charter is evidently set forth in the
Gesetze der Königlichen Deutschen Gesellschaft in
Greifswald ([Greifswald], 1740)
[GBV German Union cat.].
The royal designation is evident in this and other catalogue
records for
this Society found in the
GBV German Union cat., but curiously
not in its main publication, the
Critischer Versuch
(also known as the Critische Versuche.
