According to Volmer (2002), p.91, this Society
was founded in 1777 by Landgraf Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel as the
Société des Antiquités.
Volmer (2002), p.93 indicates that from 1785 it
was officially called the
Gesellschaft der Altertümer, and existed until 1806.
According to p.107, footnote 44 of Volmer (2002),
with the death of Friedrich II in 1785, his son Wilhelm IX set completely
new priorities for the work of the Society: the study of antiquity was to
play a much smaller role, and the middle history of Hesse took on some
importance.
