1778	This date is supported by the existence of the following book title in the Harvard Univ. cat.: Feestbundel uitgegeven door het Koninklijk Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen bij gelegenheid van zijn 150 jarig bestaan, 1778-1928; this book was published in two volumes in 1929 by the Society and printed in Weltevreden (Indonesia) by G. Kolff. After Indonesian independence in 1949, the nature of the Society changed. According to an Indonesian travel page on the National Museum: On 29th February 1950, the institution [meaning the Koninklijk Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen] became "Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia" (Indonesian Culture Council), and on 17th September 1962 it was handed over to the Indonesia government and became the Central Museum (Museum Pusat). 28th May 1979, it was renamed as the National Museum (Museum Nasional) by decree of Minister of Education and Culture (no. 092/0/1979). In additional we learn from a page on the manuscript collections of the Indonesian National Library: that the substantial oriental manuscript collection of the Society, later of the National Museum, "...in early 1989 was transferred to the National Library for safekeeping." From the above we conclude that in 1962, the Society ceased to exist as a scholarly society; its collections of cultural objects are now divided between two governmental organizations, the Museum Nasional (National Museum) and the Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia (National Library of Indonesia).

1962 - 1979	Museum Pusat (Central Museum)	According to an Indonesian travel page on the National Museum, in 1979, the Museum took the name Museum Nasional. And, according to page on the manuscript collections of the Indonesian National Library, in 1989, the Museum transferred the substantial oriental manuscript collections of the Society to the Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia (National Library of Indonesia). Clearly by 1962, the Society had ceased to exist as a scholarly society.

It seems clear from records in the GBV German Union cat. and the BLC to 1975, v.21, p.20, that the 1st edition was published in Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia); it may also have been published in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Scudder refers to this edition in #3767c. The BLC to 1975, v.21, p.20 also refers to Deel 1 - 4 of a 2nd edition that was published in Rotterdam, whilst the GBV German Union cat. refers to Deel 1 - 8 (1779 - 1826) of a 2nd edition, without giving a place of publication. Scudder evidently refers to this in a cross-reference from #898 (Rotterdam) to #725a (an Amsterdam edition). The BLC to 1975, v.21, p.20 also refers to Deel 1 - 3 (1781 - 1787) of a another edition that was published in Batavia, whilst the GBV German Union cat. refers to the same thing, without giving a place of publication. Finally, the BLC to 1975, v.21, p.20 refers to Deel 1 - 2 (1825 - 1826) of a 3rd edition (or printing) published in Batavia, whilst the GBV German Union cat. refers to the same thing, without giving a place of publication. The Cornell Univ. cat. has catalogue records for a significant proportion of the individual issues of the volumes of the Verhandelingen treated as a series; the 490 field in the MARC View gives the series title as it appears in each issue. This provides valuable information about variations in the name of the Society over an extended period of time by indicating the changes in the full title of this periodical; that information now follows.
