According to
Teylers Stichting (1978), p.12,
this Society was formed as a result of a bequest by
Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who died on 1778, April 8.
Teylers Stichting (1978), p.11 makes
it clear that Teyler lived in Haarlem and until 1763 was an important and
successful merchant and silk manufacturer;
during the last 15 years of his life he was chiefly a banker.
According to
Teylers Stichting (1978), p.12,
his executors gathered together shortly after his death to carry out the
terms
of his will, which specified, among other things, the cultivation of
religion and the encouragement of the arts and sciences.
To attain these latter goals, two societies were called into life,
Teylers Eerste Genootschap, or
Teylers Godgeleerd Genootschap
(Teylers Theological Society), and
Teylers Tweede Genootschap (to be devoted to
the advancement of scholarly research in the areas of physics,
poetry, history, the art of drawing and numismatics).
