According to an historical page on scholars associated with the Naturhistorische Museum der Burgergemeinde Bern, in 1786 Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach (1748-1830) and others founded the Privatgesellschaft naturforschender Freunde in Bern, from which in 1815 the Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Bern sprang. NOTE: This site was accessed around 2010; we have not been able to locate it anymore, as of 2024-01-23.

At a page entitled Einstein in the Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Bern, we read that on 18 December 1786, Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach (1748-1830) hosted the first meeting of the Privatgesellschaft naturforschender Freunde in Bern where the seven founding members gathered. It indicates that the Naturforschende in Bern sprang from this private society.
