the Society was founded on 1790, May 14, evidently as the
Regensburgische Botanische Gesellschaft.
During the time of the monarchy in Bavaria, the Society was allowed
to call itself the
Königliche Bayerische Botanische Gesellschaft Regensburg.
Since the Monarchy in Bavaria began in 1806 and ended in 1918, the
royal designation could have been added as early as 1806.
The evidence from its publications suggests, however, that this
designation was not used until 1808 at the earliest.
Since the Monarchy ended in 1918, the royal designation would have ceased
in that year.
It is less clear when the Bavarian descriptor ceased to be used.
The cataloguing data for the journal
Flora oder allgemeine botanische Zeitung indicates that the
name of the sponsor of that journal from 1825 - 1888 was
Königlich-Bayerische Botanische Gesellschaft in Regensburg.
It should be noted, however, that in 1890 a society with a rather similar
name was founded in Munich:
Bayerische Botanische Gesellschaft zur Erforschung der Heimischen
Flora, creating a somewhat confusing situation.
The cataloguing data for the
Denkschriften der Bayer. Botanischen Gesellschaft in
Regensburg indicates that the Bavarian descriptor was dropped in
the title of the journal between 1898 and 1905, but evidently restored after
1905 until 1936, then dropped in 1940, restored in 1946, and finally
dropped again in 1953.
