Founding of the Society

1798	According to Timm (1996), pp.29-30, this Society was founded in 1798 by Christian Friedrich Meyer. Timm (1996) notes that it was known variously as the Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde Westphalens and the (2) Westphälische Naturforschende Gesellschaft zu Brockhausen. Timm (1996), p.30 indicates that 1798 saw the publication of the first volume of the Society's Neue Schriften (but gives no indication why the first journal of the Society would involve "new" writings). Timm (1996), p.30 also indicates that 1798 saw the publication of the the first volume of the Society's Nachrichten, and quotes a few passages from that volume, including one in which the Society is referred to as the Königlich-Preußisch-Westphälische Naturforschende Gesellschaft. Timm (1996), p.30 notes that the most prominent member of the Society was the philospher Georg Wilhelm Hegel. According to Timm (1996), p.30, the 2nd volume of the Neue Schriften appeared in 1806 (the record in the GBV German Union cat. gives a date of 1805). Timm (1996), p.30 indicates that, because of the political conditions under French rule, soon afterwards the Society ceased its work and ceased to exist. According to Timm (1996), p.30, after 1806 there is no further information about the Society.
