Founding of the Society

1814 According to the Enciclopedia Italiana, v.24, p.255, the first statutes of the Circolo degli Aspiranti Naturalisti were approved in Naples in 1814, and it later became the Società dei Naturalisti in Napoli.
According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.1, p.362, the Accademia degli Aspiranti Naturalisti was founded by Oronzio Gabriele Costa in 1838. Maylender (1926-1930), v.1, pp.362-363 also reports the words of Costa himself, saying that he had barely assumed the Chair of natural history at the University of Naples, when he began inviting young students to his home for evening conversations. These conversations became regular. Gradually, Costa says, he found himself in a position to implement an idea that had already matured since 1817, but which could not have taken place then because of the political climate. Costa goes on to say that in 1838 he founded the Accademia, to which he gave the title Aspiranti Naturalisti. It was formally inaugurated in January of 1841.
Maylender (1926-1930), v.1, p.364 notes that because of the political events in the Kingdom, the Academy was dissolved in 1850, but Costa revived it in 1861, and it was once again inaugurated on 1861, January 6. Maylender (1926-1930), v.1, p.364 indicates that the Academy published its Atti, its Memorie, and its Bullettino.
