Progress of the Scholarly Societies Project
Rate of Growth of the Project
The preliminary figures below suggest that, in April 1995, the number of
new resources of scholarly societies appearing each month began to increase
significantly. We will need several months more data before it is
possible to make a reasonable projection of the size of the project at
various dates in the future.

Chronology of the Project
Below we record significant events in the development of the Project, as
well as statistical information to help track the growth in the number of
resources in the Project.
- 1995, December 1
- 564 webpages, 56 gophers, 42 subject guides & 103 serial publications
in full-text form, 45 meeting announcement lists, 21 academies, 36
federations, 23 international unions; 68% of the records in the database.
- 1995, November 1
- 500 webpages, 73 gophers, 40 subject guides & 99 serial publications
in full-text form, 42 meeting announcement lists, 21 academies, 30
federations, 23 international unions; 66% of the records in the database.

- 469 webpages, 75 gophers, 40 subject guides & 94 serial publications
in full-text form, 41 meeting announcement lists, 21 academies, 28
federations, 23 international unions.

- 416 webpages, 76 gophers, 39 subject guides & 91 serial publications
in full-text form, 37 meeting announcement lists, 19 academies, 27

- The long alphabetical list of webpages was split into lists
divided by the first letter of the society name. The long list was still
being maintained as well. This solution is a temporary one until a database
containing all information about the societies has been completed, and
appropriate search engines to the database have been constructed.

- 1995, July (Early)
- An area for international unions was established, containing 12
unions. Also the retrospective gopher management project was completed:
the only gopher links remaining should be for societies that do not have
webpages.

- Chronicle of Higher Education article on the Project (p.A27) At the
time, there were 123 webpages & 110 gophers.

- Implemented a chronology for many, but not all, societies with
webpages in the Project.
- 1995, Jan. (early)
- Added 4 hypertext essays on "The Role of Scholarly Societies in
Scholarly Communication". Also added a set of essays on the development
of the Project.

- Official announcement of the WWW phase of the Project. At the time,

- Prototype for WWW phase of the Project was developed. At the time,
there were:

- Official announcement of the gopher phase of the Project. At the
