According to an authority record in the Illinet cat., a note on p.2 of the 1883, Sept.1 issue of the Circular of selections indicates that this Society was organized in Mar. 1823.

A note at the at first in Calcutta website reads "The European physicians in Calcutta met on 1st March.1823, to found the 'Calcutta Medical & Physical Society'. The venue of the meeting was The Asiatic Society.".

There is some valuable historical information on this Society and its first journal (Transactions) to be found in an article by S. D. Sinha in the National Medical Journal of India entitled Transactions of the Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta: The first English language medical journal in India.

The quoted Sinha article gives some information on the initial work of the society, but is devoted primarily to its Transactions.

QUESTION: Were the Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta and the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal different entities? Although it is very easy to find publications of the Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta. We have found only two for the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal :

  • in the Index-catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon-General's Office, United States Army, there is an entry for the Transactions of the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal [Calcutta], where p.115 cites Oct. 6, 1838 - Oct.3, 1840 and provides the following journal-title abbreviation: Tr. M. & Phys. Soc. Bengal, Calcutta.
  • in the National LIbrary of Medicine (USA), there is an entry for the Circular of selections ; the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal with sub-title Medical and Physical Society of Bengal.; Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta. Meeting, which cites a run of [No. 1] (1st Sept. 1838) - no. 30 (6th Mar. 1841).
It should be noted that the runs for these two entry overlap roughly. Given this information, it is not absolutely clear that these were two separate societies. It is possible that Medical and Physical Society of Bengal [Calcutta] was simply an alternative name for Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta.

We have found no records of its existence past 1845.

The record in the Edinburgh Univ. cat. indicates that this journal had the half-title: Medical and physical transactions.

There is some valuable historical information on this Society and its first journal (Transactions) to be found in an article by S. D. Sinha in the National Medical Journal of India entitled Transactions of the Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta: The first English language medical journal in India.

In the quoted Sinha article, we learn that “The TMPSC was published annually in 1825, 1826 and 1827; then once in two years till 1836. According to Leonard Rogers (Indian Medical Service), ‘In 1837–38, six quarterly journals were distributed among the members, but in 1842 a large volume was published…and a ninth volume was issued in 1845, which is the last to be found in the Medical College Library.’”

A record in the WorldCat gives a separate entry for Quarterly journal of the Calcutta Medical and Physical Society with publication history: 1837 - 1838 in 6 volumes.

Circular of selections ; the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal

The sub-title is given as Medical and Physical Society of Bengal.; Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta. Meeting.

It is not entirely clear whether there was a separate society called the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal.

There is a separate entry for the Transactions of the Medical and Physical Society of Bengal in the Index-catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon-General's Office, United States Army, where p.115 cites Oct. 6, 1838 - Oct.3, 1840, which roughly matches the time period of the Circular of selections.

Title from caption; first issue lacks title and numbering. Consists chiefly of articles formerly published in European and American journals. Lacks no. 26 for Oct. 1840. Separately paged papers that were distributed with the circulars are bound at end of vol. Contains proceedings of the Meetings of the Medical and Physical Society of Calcutta.
