1776	According to Rotondi (2000), p.39, the Society was founded in 1776 by Empress Maria Teresa of Austria as the Società Patriotica di Milano; the name is also given on p.39 in the title of the article, and in footnote 1 as Società Patriottica di Milano. It is not clear why Rotondi (2000) uses two different spellings for the second word. It should be noted that many of the bibliographic references in the footnotes on pp.39-41 use the doubled t. On the other hand, its Atti give the name of the Society as Società Patriotica di Milano (i.e. without the doubled t in the second word). According to Rotondi (2000), p.39, in 1778 it held its first public meeting. Rotondi (2000), p.41 indicates that the Society was active between 1778 and 1797, during which time it had two hundred sessions, which resulted in three volumes of Atti and a collection of selected articles edited by Carlo Amoretti. It should be noted that Rotondi (2000), p.42 indicates that the last actual meeting of the Society was, however, 1796, September 15. Hence there must have been some activity outside the sessions into the year 1797. According to Rotondi (2000), p.43, in 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte decreed that an Istituto Nazionale della Repubblica Cisalpina be set up. By the time that this was actually done in 1802, the Republic had become the Repubblica Italiana, and the Institute began life as the Istituto Nazionale Italiano. We may consider that the work of the Società Patriottica di Milano was continued to some extent by the Istituto Nazionale Italiano.
