1784	Its website () indicates that the Society was founded in 1784 "to promote the regeneration of rural Scotland including the preservation of its poetry, language and music." To this end they created and published in 1828 the first Gaelic dictionary, Dictionarium scoto-celticum : a dictionary of the Gaelic language; comprising an ample vocabulary of Gaelic words ... with their signification and various meanings in English and Latin ... and vocabularies of Latin and English words with their translation into Gaelic. To which are prefixed, an introduction explaining the nature, objects and sources of the work, and a compendium of Gaelic grammar. In 1834 the Society added the designation "Agricultural" to its name. And, according to its website (), it now "concentrates largely on promoting Scottish agriculture."
