In June, 2005 it occurred to the Editor that useful results might be obtained fairly expeditiously using the ingenious search engine at the JSTOR archive of the Philosophical Transactions. The technique involved searching on abbreviations that had already been discovered using the bibliographical tools. The search option was a boolean AND search, rather than searching as an exact phrase.

Typically some variant abbreviations were found this way. In addition, two other things usually happened. Firstly, the results often suggested other search statements. And, secondly, in the process of examining the pages of the journal that were retrieved, journal-title abbreviations for completely unrelated journals were discovered.

In July, 2005 the above technique was broadened to cover other journals in the JSTOR archive. Currently, the following journals in the JSTOR archive (and elsewhere) have been used:
